Relapses are really bad, they make you question every decision you make; you question your hard work your will to work harder, or even the purpose of doing what you do. All the patience, the hard work, persistence, the way to build your path all come down to nothing. It can be frustrating.
But you
know life never stops it keeps on going whether you want to go or not. So is
the philosophy with relapses, it doesn’t matter if you are a cocaine addict or
heroine. Whether alcohol is your vice or nicotine. Might as well be the modern drugs of porn or social media. If you don’t want to do it
and your mind and body force you to do it, then it’s a relapse!
And I don’t
think it is something to be shameful of, instead you have to be proud of
yourself to choose this tough path for yourself and people you love. Relapses
are a part of the process and learn to walk only after falling a few times.
What really matters is how long are you willing to stick with the process and
how far you’ll reach.
See, life
is endless, and the world will still revolve around the sun whether you’re on it or
not. It's not about that. It's about your freedom to what you want, and keep
doing it. Remember that every day sober is just 1 more day away from relapse and
this is just how things are designed.
The human
mind is inquisitive to experiences and pleasure and this type of behavior can
be repetitive, this is what we call an addiction. The cue initiates the
behavior and the pleasure response keeps it going.
Now to stop
that behavior is rewiring the brain for less dopamine or signaling its dopamine
from somewhere else.
And it is
the only known way to get out of addition, i.e., get the brain on some other
source of dopamine. A study done on mice addicted to heroin did that, they
eliminated heroin from their system and introduced a new female mouse every
day. Turns out the withdrawal symptoms of heroin vanished, but the mouse
became addicted to sex.
Now the
scientists stopped the replacement of the mouse and kept a running wheel in the
cage. Slowly the dopamine hit from the new mouse and sex decreased and the
mouse started to become normal.
This proves that to get off an addiction you have to create a new one!
now I am
not suggesting to switch your addiction to something else. Replace your
old habits with new ones and keep them in such order that you don’t have the
physical/mental energy or time to practice your addiction.
1. Run
2. Meditate
3. Weight
train
4. Read
5. Immerse
yourself in your work
6. Create something
7. Follow
your passion
8. Do
something that terrifies you.
Get that thrill
of life going. This may be your last relapse, I hope. But if you relapse again
come back and read this again, talk to your friends and normalize the topic.
Don’t be too hard on yourself.
You’ll outgrow
this as well.
